Food and drink manufacturing has a turnover of over Ł66billion per year and is the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK, accounting for almost 15% of the UKs total manufacturing (Food and Drink Federation, 2005). The food sector is extremely competitive with the large supermarkets continually striving to get the best value they can for their customers leading to tighter margins for the food manufacturers.
