Accountancy and finance jobs in the food and drink sector
Accountants working within the food manufacturing industry sector will enjoy fast paced and commercial roles such as Cost Accountants and Supply Chain Accountants.
Food and drink manufacturing has a turnover of over £66billion per year and is the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK, accounting for almost 15% of the UK’s total manufacturing (Food and Drink Federation, 2005). The food sector is extremely competitive with the large supermarkets continually striving to get the best value they can for their customers leading to tighter margins for the food manufacturers. This means that accountants working within the food manufacturing sector will be commercially focused to ensure that sales are maximised, margins are controlled and that costs are kept to a minimum.
Accountants will also look closely at distribution and warehousing costs and positions exist for Distribution Centre Accountants and Supply Chain Accountants. As food manufacturing is very much a volume business, Cost Accountants will also play a key role in providing accurate information to key personnel within finance and operational management. Often food manufacturers will have stock based accountancy/IT packages so it is useful for accountants wishing to develop a career within the food sector to gain experience of ERP computer systems.
