Graduate accountancy and finance jobs: latest vacancies
Capita Financial Resourcing provides services to the public and private sector, of which approximately 9% is within the graduate-related segment.
Our experience suggests that some undergraduates/graduates are deterred from applying to certain industries by recruitment practices which deliver a low quality of candidate experience. As a result, we ensure that we constantly work to best practice guidelines documented by AGR (the collective voice of graduate recruiters), AGCAS (the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) and the NUS (National Union of Students), to ensure that we identify the most suitable candidates for our clients and provide the best application experience for candidates.
UK Graduate Market
Graduate vacancies within the UK continue to increase and our experience suggests that many recruiters in the UK are not confident that they will be able to fill all vacancies. The main reason for this is that a large number of applicants leaving university do not have the required skills or qualifications sought by employers. Despite this, graduate salaries have continued to rise and the number of employers who are prepared to offer a ‘sign on’ bonus to successful graduates has also risen.
Detailed below are the key market trends we have noted as a result of our experience in the graduate recruitment market:
- Investment banking had 900 more graduate vacancies in 2006 than it did two years ago;
- More than three quarters of the UK's leading employers are hiring for graduate vacancies in London or the South East of England this year;
- The public sector remains a major employer of graduates;
- Graduate hiring by the Big Four accountancy firms has increased by 50 per cent since 2004;
- There are over 30%, or 60,000 more graduates per year compared to 10 years ago;
- There are nearly 50% more graduates, or 46,000 a year, entering the workplace, compared to 10 years ago.
What is accountancy like as an industry?
Accountancy operates within a fairly corporate business sphere, but also suits candidates with a flair for numbers and attention to detail. Due to its many applications and related fields, however, accounting does allow for a fairly varied job content, depending on the particular focus area of any particular position. As such, staying in one position may be detrimental to your accounting career, however, moving around too much can be equally damaging.
