Accountancy jobs in public practice
Accountants in private practice provide a fee-paying service to companies, public sector bodies and individuals. They provide financial advice and specialist knowledge in areas like audit, tax, insolvency and raising finance for new projects. In smaller practices, they usually deal with most financial aspects, including filing tax returns and preparing end-of-year accounts. Some practices offer other services, including employment law, human resources, payroll and training.
In accounting practice jobs salaries range from £15,000 to £23,500 for trainees, up to £150,000 for a practice director or partner.

Approximately 245,000 qualified accountants work in the UK. Private practice accountancy firms vary widely in size, from small partnerships serving a local area to large international companies. Roughly half of the jobs are in London, but smaller practices are spread throughout the UK.
Most accountancy trainees are graduates. Recruiters accept any degree subject, but especially maths, accountancy, business studies, economics and finance. It is also possible to start at a technician level and work up through taking professional qualifications. Mature applicants are welcomed.
Trainees take professional accountancy qualifications and complete practical work-based training. They may study by day or block release and evening classes, or by distance and open learning. By law, to work as a registered company auditor, an accountant must have an audit qualification.
Individuals in accounting practice jobs may be promoted to team leaders, management, and ultimately senior partners. There are also freelance, consultancy and self-employment opportunities, and some set up their own accountancy practice.
