Accountants working within the Utilities sector can enjoy diverse careers within gas, electricity, water, waste disposal, public transport, road, rail and sometimes telecoms companies; all of which have undergone exciting changes in recent years. Broadly speaking a utility is a company that maintains infrastructure for a public service and often also provides a service using that infrastructure as well. In recent years largely government controlled utilities have gone through a range of privatisations.

Utilities organisations will often be large and complex in structure and as the majority of their services are often used by a large local or national population they will often have a high volume of transactions occurring on a daily basis; meaning that many accountants working within this sector will often be tasked either with consolidation duties or will perhaps be given ownerships for the accounts of a specific geographic region. As such, careers within these firms can be very specialised, or indeed very broad ranging in responsibilities.

Even in 2008, many utilities companies will have a range of post and pre-privatisation contracts in place which means that accountants have to be extremely astute to be able to produce accounts and with issues such as fluctuating oil prices and the pressure to produce green energy and waste disposal, it is certain to mean that accounting in this sector will continue to be challenging and stimulating as a career.
